Last night, Mendon, Ben and I were picked up by the MU police.
because we went running.
Again, we took off down 27? for a night run. It's straight and hilly and it's easy to let your brain fizzle while your body just takes you for a run. Last night, it was humid and dark and foggy.
Mendon, after some time, realized: What on earth are we doing? We're on a 2-lane highway, it's dark and FOGGY, our lead runner (as usual) doesn't have white/light on, and it FRIDAY night. The chance that one of these drivers will be inebriated is just too high. Mendon has us turn around, but the running isn't any better. We take a few side streets and finally, because I can't feel my legs (happens sometimes, but it makes me wobbly and prone to tripping) we walk.
We move off of the road and get frustrated with ourselves. We get close to Ditmer, the rugby pitch, and we see a car pull in and sit there. Then it pulls out towards us and we can see the lights on top. They pull over and ask, as if they could never fathom it to be true, "are you guys exercising???" Uh... we hesitate, we can't believe it either, yeah....we are. They offer us a ride, and we take it. Our driver drops us off on the far side of campus as she checks in with the station, letting them know that she has some students. "Yeah, they were exercising... I know... My idea of exercising involves a TV and beer, I don't get it either..." You can hear them thinking something like "kids these days" but we all just sit, our legs cramping in such a small, small backseat. We were, of course, locked in the car when we finally wanted out.
Funny PS: Our driver calls MU students "deer" for the way they wander into the road and then freeze when they see that they're jaywalking in front of cops. She says that she'll use the airhorn from time to time if they won't start back up.
Kristen, you had me concerned for a moment--until I read further about your "adventure." Glad you three decided to turn around--Be Safe--you and Mendon are most important to me.
For crying out loud! Doesn't Miami have a track or trails where you can run safely? Ack, Ack, Ack! Go Gramma Dorsey! Right on!
Miami does indeed have a track. Unfortunately it is so clogged by self-conscious bleach blonds that you'd think that a Mattel truck flipped over and the magic fairy got drunk and kept missing Pinnocchio!
So What!?! Keep Safe! Don't be so darned bigotted.
Mendon, more than he is bigotted, is trying to be funny. So, Miami does have a track, but it is not huge and it can be tedious to run it for so long, especially because it's usually crowded or not lit. To get off campus for a run is wonderful, and usually much safer than our most recent attempt. We will also run on campus, and head out to the Western campus, the stadium and all other corners. Occassionally, we'll head up town, but that can be problematic, too. Besides pollution, we also have to deal with all of the houses. Frat houses and houses that are rented by the MU students. Bleh.
Miami should be big enough for safe jogs.
Do you remember your earlier childhood experience in the back of a police car, when we realized you can't open the doors? (I had a mazda van that would only break down when it was dark, cold and very snowy). Mentor police finally insisted that they take the stubborn mom and her kids home, even though I KNEW that van would start back up if we waited a little longer).
That reminds me of the time our van decided it would really like to just honk its horn CONSTANTLY. Were we in Euclid? Wickliffe? And the police came out and just cut the wires. Later on, none of us could take our driver's test in it (thank the heavens above!) because we couldn't get the horn to work again.
Oooo. I do remember that! At first it was sort of funny, then I got sort of paniced that the stoopid thing just wouldn't shut up! I don't think we ever did get it working again, at least not as long as I drove the car. I think Daddy may have gotten it going once he took the van back.
I think we were picking up Hailey and or Urana for some event.
Yes, it was Hailey & then we went to Chagrin Falls.
Momma, I do remember the Mazda van. Quite well, actually. And the police car. I was afraid you were going to ask if I remembered the time(s) I locked us out of one car or another. I've such a tendency to lock myself (and others) out. I almost did it earlier this week, only to find that my key was in an unusual pocket of computer case. Nice job.
As for the Dornbrook horn, I remember that! Ok, maybe I have just spent an amazing amount of time hearing all of your stories. I think that one came out when the Dynasty horn got stuck a month or so back. Interesting.
We do seem to have horn problems. I also had trouble with the VW. I couldn't figure out why it would sometimes honk for no apparent reason. Turns out I had a big clunky key chain that was getting in a gap (intentional) in the steering column and when the metal got in the gap, it caused a connection (I'm getting out of my technological knowledge here) and it would beep and beep. After I learned the cause, I got a smaller key ring and it was all better.
