If I remember my Human Growth and Development classes correctly, then "dada" is a first word because its one of the easier phonemes to put together. Moms might get claim on first word by choosing to be called "gaga". ;) He is obviously engaged once you started using Motherese, rewarded for good attempts, and learned just when to respond.
