Dennis Leary and the Happiness Postulate
Dennis Leary talked about happiness in one of his stand up comedy routines.
He said that happiness comes in small bundles - you eat the cookie, you smoke the cigarette, you have the orgasm - and then it's over. Back to reality, back to your dull job or your boring marriage, middle class existence or whatever.
In my case, happiness came last night in meeting a pair of really sweet people: Julia and Danni, both from Germany and over here to study journalism for a semester. They're from Darmstad (I hope I spelled that right) and were just really kind and interesting.
I had them over for dinner last night and I'll get pictures up soon for the rest of you. I just couldn't find my camera on the night.
Comments

Take care bro.

Thanks for the spelling correction, dude!
I'm not sure if I should go back and correct it in the original post or not, though; it would make your comment look oddly out of place. I think I'll leave it.

What kinds of sugar are there in the wide world that are other than white granular and brown natural? What uses do they have and are they a real part of culture? I saw this cube of porous and really really hard stufff you dip in your tea and suck the tea out of it. Nobody seemed what to callit!? Maybe it's persian.......

Yup, that's Persian alright. Don't remember what they call it though. Also, in the areas of the world where sugar cane is grown, sugar cane is a popular treat - you just cut a bit, peel it? and suck & chew on it (for a loooong time) - Yum!

Actually, I believe they are called 'sugar cubes'. When I was a child, my mother used to dip them in her coffee and then let me suck on it, like a coffee flavored candy. Ooooh, if only coffee tasted so good. I think that might have spoiled me for coffee altogether. It was, after being dipped, called a canard, which means duck. Named after the motion a duck makes when sitting on water and ducking his head under the water. I like to think dunk is a derivation of the word duck. Don't know for sure, but it makes sense to me.

And who the heck is Dennis Leary and why am I the only one who doesn't have a clue?

The Persian sugar is put in the mouth when you drink tea, and the tea eventually dissolves it to expose an almond sliver.

I do remember Mimi lamenting that the American sugar cubes were just not up to par. They needed to be sturdier, more like the ones Daddy found, maybe?

Ain't no way I'm calling my sugar 'CANARD". Not even a dog should have that acclamation I think!!! Sounds like what you do when your pet canary dies. One canrds their dead canary. OOh,I actually like that!
I canard, do you? may be a new way to have conversation with strangers one meets. Canarding for apples on Holloween could be a new/olde game huh? So ducks canard and not dunk eh? KEWL......
Maybe it stands for 'Bottoms up',
sort of like having ones 'can' facing up in the aire(in this case-the ARD).
