I'm writing from the great state of Mississippi. Yes, the very state we were so aptly taught to despise by our northern indoctrination. Yes, the state that children so proudly announce that they are capable of spelling only to add one to many 'I-S-S' 's to. Yes, the self same state where the Freedom Summer murders occurred. The one that is named after that river, what's its name?
Kristen and I are down here visiting her Uncle Frank, Aunt Mary Jo, and Grandmother Briggs. Yesterday, I discovered El Dorado of the Briggs family, pictures from fifteen years ago (or so). I've taken the liberty to post some of them. Here's a great photo of Uncle Frank (our host), Charlie (Kristen's father), Linda (Kristen's mother), Drew (Kristen's brother) and a corner of a young woman who, in later years, would come to be known as the most mischievous girl in the South! Actually, I was so amazed by the picture of Charles and Linda in their youth that I decided to torture them with another one
I also found a good photograph of Grandmother, a true southern aristocratic matriarch. Granted, this picture was taken eighteen years ago, but she looks about the same. Interestingly, even the Briggs family will mistake me for Nathan. Isn't that ridiculous. Grandmother bought some sherry today and turned around to me, looked me dead in the eye and said, "Now Nathan, you hold this for me!" It leaves one to question whether or not its a supernatural occurrence, even Mother Nature confuses the two of us.
I found a few other photographs that were wholly out of place. I found a picture of my spouse when she was tiny *so small*. What in the world does she have in her hands? Also, somebody in Honduras lost their children, does anybody want them? Speaking of lost children, I found some misplaced young women. Nathan, you can pick them up at the Dornbrook.com lost and found. And, my best guess here is Glacier National Park, any takers?
Next up, I have a few video interviews that my hosts graciously granted me. The one with Uncle Frank has him talking about what it was like for him here in Jackson immediately after Katrina. The two interviews with Aunt Mary Jo, she is talking about a memorable event from her youth and some memories of her children.
This one is, by far, the best interview. Keep watching!
Mensch, you do realize that some of these photos are in your photo album, right?
Thanks for sharing. The story about Grandma Briggs calling you Nathan is too funny!!
