I promised Nathan that I'd post about this in March. Sorry Nae. This is, in effect, an open letter to everyone who reads my blog but, mainly, to Nathan, Rahmat, and the rest of my family.
My concern is that we all have these fabulous accounts here at dornbrook.com. We are able to post our blogs, read one another's, comment, have a jolly field day. However, at @dornbrook.com we have email accounts that we can use to communicate with the rest of the world. And, let's be honest, for myself, Nathan, Maman, Papa, and Rahmat what is cooler than having YourName@dornbrook.com? People look at that and think, "Someone in the family is a web genius!" Ok, its Nathan, but they don't need to know that, they can think that it's you! (For Rachael and Mara, I think that the only thing cooler would be YourName@YourLastName.com)
However, there are, admittedly, a few problems with this. The blogs, I think, became very popular because Mara became a huge participant on the blogs. Mara isn't any cooler than Nathan; she's more accesible to the rest of us. Mainly, she responds to our emails/calls. Unfortunately, the two administrators of the webmail @dornbrook.com are Nathan and Rahmat. I love them both dearly and think very highly of them but, ahem, one lives in Argentina and has an active and thriving life there and the other lives in Edinburgh with an active and thriving life there. Now, why don't the rest of us have an administrator that is available, say, without a life that is interesting, albeit active? Nathan, I feel that we, the dornbrook family, are more likely to begin using @dornbrook.com webmail if you, say, spend an hour or so setting me up as a site administrator and giving me a little bit of education on that. If anything, I can dole out new passwords when they are forgotten.
Please, use this forum as well as Nathan's blog to post obnoxious comments or to make productive suggestions about @dornbrook.com.
I would like to start the bidding:
Nathan, is there a way that we can integrate the dornbrook.com mt weblog with our @dornbrook.com webmail such that signing in to one or the other gives us access to both? That would be a great way to get people to use the email feature!
Wait. Do I have an at Dornbrook.com email??? How does one learn about such a thing???
Posted by: Kristen at April 11, 2006 11:24 PMYou know, I suspect Grandma uses hers. I noticed Rahmat emailed her at that address. I think he might have set it up for her.
Posted by: Mara at April 12, 2006 3:17 AMHe may have emailed her there, but I guarantee that she has never checked it.
Posted by: Ma at April 12, 2006 12:34 PMYou can log on to the @dornbrook.com email address from the front page of the dornbrook.com website.
I'll see if I can't move it into the MovableType scripts so you can get to it from there.
And I'll set up an account for Kristen.
Posted by: Nathan Dornbrook at April 12, 2006 1:18 PMNathan, you don't need to worry over getting one set up for me. I was just curious if such a thing was already there and neglected. What if I, like Grandma, was not checking it?
Posted by: Kristen at April 12, 2006 2:21 PMI will be using my account on this site once I am working and want to eliminate the chay thing except for family. I will then learn all I need to in order to function well there.
Posted by: papa D at April 12, 2006 6:19 PMAll right Nae, here's the honest truth. I've forgotten my password again. Can we just get rid of that messy business requiring that we use a number in the password? I A) don't have anything sensitive in there, B) know that someone could break in, regardless, and C) am kept out because I keep forgetting the password.
Posted by: Mendon at April 12, 2006 6:22 PMUnfortunately, I don't set the password policy. Erik Kangas sets the password policy, and he's set it fairly steep.
Mind you, I'd set it fairly steep, too.
You should be able to put the login and password into the keychain on Kristen's Mac. Alternatively, you could use Password Safe (free download from Bruce Schneier) on a PC.
I'll reset your password and call you.
