Sins against olive oil

Kristen and I arrived in Oxford last night. It makes me think of some sci-fi planet that was so far out in the middle of nowhere that they named the whole planet Journey's End because, well, you can't go any further in nowhere. Oxford, Journey's End, same place. Hayley's father generously drove us down and kindly tolerated me. After a wretched day of solid travel back to the States we were finally home.

*Sigh*

We were so relieved. We spent yesterday evening unpacking and cleaning the apartment and turning the heat back on (it wasn't off, we just put it at a cold temperature to save someone else money?).

Now, Kristen is off to class and I've an hour before I have to follow in her footsteps. I've already spent some of the morning straightening the house but, when I had breakfast, I did something that Kristen would wholly disapprove of. I made Raman, Nathan style. Nathan, you see, has taught me many things, one of them being a love for Raman. When I was young, he showed me the proper technique for draining the water from the noodles so that one does not have to have soup but can rather have just noodles. Then, after draining the noodles, one adds the entire salt pack. It doesn't mean that you're having more or less salt than you would if you had the broth, it's just more potent:) This morning, I added a little bit of olive oil to the whole process.

This presents a dilemma. I have mixed my dark pleasure for junk food with my radiantly bright pleasure for wonderful food. The question is, have I simply made a gray food that is disgusting or is there a multiplicative effect of mixing some of my favorite flavors? Nathan, before you comment on the nature of this concoction I ask that you try it yourself. I found it quite pleasant. Like properly whipped cream.

Ramen is a legitimate noodle. It is not like ramen is inherently a junk food. The instant packs, well that's another thing, but I know one of my Japanese friends often grabs the noodles out of those packs to make other delicious and easy recipes.

Hey, Mensch!

Delicious. I heartily approve. I also tried another bowl and used a bit of buerre barrat, and, if you can get Normandy butter in Journey's End, you should give it a try. I think you'll like it.

Ramen noodles are great, by the way. Serendipitously, as you were posting this entry, I was buying a case of ramen noodles.

And I usually add less than the whole packet of salt now. I just sprinkle some on top before eating, like it was some kind of salt mix, like Jane's Crazy Mixed-Up Salt, except chicken flavoured.
