Earlier today Kristen shipped her blueberry hat off to the breast feeding drive. Later in the afternoon I made a blueberry pie. Katie is over and soon I will whip some cream and we will enjoy the pie. Here is a photograph of the pie along with the Druze glasses we bought on our honeymoon and the wine glass markers that Kristen made for her cousin Tally's wedding (she gave one set to Tally and kept the other for us:). Our wine tonight is a white vinum nonvere.
I will keep you posted as the evening progresses.
Here are some subsequent photos. This is what most people feel is the best part of baking. I happen to think that it is the period immediately after finishing when everyone lies about in a soporific stupor after having eaten far too much!
After a long day of winning bread, it's easy to see that Kristen is famished!
Our friend Katie is just too cute! And, I also think that she thinks that I'm really weird! ...
...
That is all.
I don't know why but this strongly reminds me of the goat slaughtering that I watched when I was in Gambia. I think it's the eye. Maybe Helen can explain it.
After we finished devouring the pie (most of which we'd eaten while we were still standing, before realizing that we were only standing for the pictures) we played Set! The Family Game of Visual Perception. (Why were we standing for the photos?)
I can see by the middle plate that somebody scraped their plate clean--an indication of a Very Good Pie.
Posted by: Hayley at July 27, 2006 11:49 PMIt looks dee-vine! I made a rhubarb-cherry pie for Nathan's 4th of July BBQ and ever since I've been itching to make another one. Mmmm, pie!
Though I must admit, I'm not quite sure I see the connection between hats and a 'breastfeeding drive'? Please enlighten me!
Posted by: Mara at July 28, 2006 5:55 AMIt comes from Yarn Harlot. (Yarnharlot.ca/blog/) I was going to try to link you to the post where she talks about it, but I couldn't find the specific one. She writes about knitting, but she is just a hoot anyway.
Posted by: Ma at July 28, 2006 8:44 AMWow! Blueberry pie. I'm a bit jealous. Of course, I prefer a fresh (as in raw) blueberry pie, but I suspect that I can no longer handle the whipped cream. And what is fresh blueberry pie without whipped Cream?
Posted by: Ma at July 28, 2006 8:46 AMI read the yarn harlot, she's hilarious. The pie was made with fresh blueberries, though we didn't pick them ourselves. And, according to Kristen, the crust was very good (I liked it, too, but the cook never has a valid opinion).
On another note, I'm surprised that no one commented on my wine joke. I thought everyone would find it really funny. I guess that that's my sense of humor for you.
Posted by: Mendon at July 28, 2006 9:24 AMBy the way, Kristen: wine glass markers! What a great gift idea!
Posted by: Mara at July 28, 2006 10:13 AMSorry. I knew it was a joke, but not knowing wine (Or Latin or whatever I needed to know to get it), I didn't really get it. Care to explain?
Posted by: Ma at July 28, 2006 12:48 PMVinum (wine) non (not) vere (real). It's Welches white grape juice:)
Posted by: Mendon at July 28, 2006 2:18 PMMendon,
I did get a kick out of your wine joke--I chuckled because you make your audience work to understand your jokes :) Perhaps that's not the kind of amusement you hoped to get, but I enjoyed it nonetheless. I understood it right away, but had to check because I was not 100% sure on the exact literal translation.
I mostly appreciate having to explain jokes. Been doing it all my papa days! Mmmmmmmmmblueberrypie!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Doh!
Posted by: papa D at July 28, 2006 5:47 PMI think Ma meant raw blueberry pie when she said fresh blueberry pie. I find that though I have come around to liking blueberries that I still don't like blueberry pie - even when I make it. I do enjoy a good pie.
Posted by: Rae at July 29, 2006 2:05 AMNot only did I mean raw when I said fresh, I even said fresh too. And I think I am going to try Lactaid to see if I can 'do' the whipped cream. I mean, one still has to live, right? (There are times I miss my old life. Like blueberry season.)
make sure you do home made whipped cream. I find it works much better for me than the stuff full of preservatives.
